SASCHA NOBLE
“POUCH”
ARTBOX, LEVEL 3 FISHER LIBRARY (2024)
ARTIST STATEMENT
Pouch explores the concept of women as vessels. It responds to stereotypical standards of beauty and historical views of the “function” of a woman, as a reproductive prize. Ceramics has a history of serving as a skin for storytelling, mirroring how individuals’ skin tells their personal histories. Stretch marks, scars, skin pigmentation are all natural features of growing and living human bodies, however until recently these features have not been depicted as aesthetically valuable. Pouch urges viewers to consider these traditional roles and functions of ceramic, skin, and vessel and how they exist in today’s climate of reclamation, transformation, and acceptance.
